How to Become a CA After 12th: A Complete Guide

Becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) is one of the most respected and rewarding career paths for commerce students in India. If you’re planning your future after completing your 12th standard, pursuing CA can open doors to high-paying and prestigious job opportunities. Here's a step-by-step guide to becoming a CA after 12th.


Step 1: Register for CA Foundation Course

After passing Class 12 (preferably in Commerce stream), your first step is to register with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for the CA Foundation Course.

Eligibility:

  • Must have passed Class 12 from a recognized board.

  • Registration with ICAI can be done online through their official website.

Subjects in CA Foundation:

  1. Principles and Practice of Accounting

  2. Business Laws and Business Correspondence

  3. Business Mathematics and Logical Reasoning

  4. Business Economics and Commercial Knowledge

You must prepare well, as this is your first official step into the world of accountancy.


Step 2: Appear and Clear CA Foundation Exam

  • The CA Foundation exam is held twice a year: in May and November.

  • It is mandatory to wait for a minimum of four months after registration before appearing in the exam.

  • Once you clear this exam, you can register for the next level: CA Intermediate.


Step 3: Register for CA Intermediate Course

CA Intermediate is the second level and consists of two groups, each containing four subjects.

Key Requirements:

  • Register for the Intermediate course after clearing CA Foundation.

  • Start preparing for the exams while also completing the ICITSS (Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills) – a 4-week training program.


Step 4: Practical Training (Articleship)

After clearing either both groups or at least Group I of CA Intermediate, you become eligible for 3 years of Articleship training under a practicing Chartered Accountant.

Articleship Details:

  • It is a mandatory internship that gives real-world exposure.

  • Helps you develop core skills in audit, taxation, finance, and accounting.


Step 5: Register for CA Final Course

Once you complete both groups of Intermediate and at least 2.5 years of your articleship, you can register for the CA Final—the last stage of the CA journey.

CA Final Subjects Include:

  • Financial Reporting

  • Strategic Financial Management

  • Advanced Auditing

  • Corporate Laws and more

You must also complete the Advanced ICITSS before appearing for the final exams.


Step 6: Clear CA Final & Become a Chartered Accountant

After clearing both groups of the CA Final exam and completing the Articleship, you are eligible to apply for membership with ICAI. Once approved, you officially become a Chartered Accountant!
